Today outdoor swimming might seem best reserved for sunny holidays abroad, but just a short time ago a swimming revolution saw the British take our waterways by storm

This list is by no means exhaustive; there were many other bathing places regularly in use on river banks, canal and lake sides, just as today people will swim in the sea not just at seaside resorts but anywhere along the coast. Even so the provision of public bathing places listed here deepens our understanding of the popularity of outdoor swimming in the not too distant past, when people were proud to be an outdoor swimming society.
