The Highgate Men's Pond and the Kenwood Ladies' Pond are the UK's only life-guarded, open-water swimming places open every day all year. Together with the Mixed Pond, they were dug in the 1700s to provide water for London.
The men's pond, opened in 1893, became popular as a training ground for boxers John Conteh and Frank Bruno. The women's pond, opened in 1926, has attracted Channel swimmers and film star Katharine Hepburn. And then there is the Parliament Hill lido. Built in 1938, it survived a Second World War bombing raid and severe financial problems in the Eighties and is now one of only two outdoor unheated pools in London. More…
